Hiring a Skip to Clean Out Your Garage: Useful Tips

Cleaning out your garage can be a big job, and you may want to hire a skip bin to make it a bit easier. Want your garage cleaning to go as smoothly as possible? Take a look at these tips:

1. Sort your garage before the skip arrives.

If you are hiring a skip, you can have it as you clean out your garage, and that makes it easy to purge things as you find them. However, that process can also be time consuming. If you want to save money on the skip hiring fee, you may want to sort your garage first and make a pile of everything you want to purge. Then, have the skip company drop off the skip and potentially pick it up the same day or the next day.

2. Remember to make a recycling plan.

Whilst a skip can hold a lot of rubbish, it cannot accommodate everything in your garage. In particular, if you have old cans of paint, you must recycle them. Contact your local council to learn about recycling options in your area. In some cases, you can drop off items at a recycling facility, and in other cases, you may be able to arrange a pick up for free or in exchange for a fee.

Other items that you may find in your garage that must be recycled rather than thrown in a skip include pesticides, herbicides, fluorescent tubes, motor oils and car batteries.

3. Consider a small, portable skip.

If you don't have a lot of rubbish to dispose of, you may want to consider hiring a small, portable skip or a soft-sided skip. Unlike a full-size skip, these smaller alternatives can often fit inside your garage. This saves you time as you don't have to walk from the garage to the skip, and being able to work in the garage helps you enjoy shade if it's hot outside.

4. Support skips on asphalt driveways.

If you need a full size skip to clean out your garage, you may need to put it in your driveway. If you have a cement driveway, it should easily support a skip. However, asphalt driveways tend to be a bit softer, and as a result, you may want to arrange some timber so that you can place your skip onto that to alleviate some of the weight from your drive.
